Weeds - Dr. John Boyd

My Bermudagrass lawn has begun taking over one of my garden beds. What can I do
to keep my beds clear? (Martha, Clarendon)
Use Sethoxydim, fluazifop or clethodim for control in garden beds, but don't
apply these to ornamental grasses.
I have tall plants with thin green stems and leaves popping up in my lawn that
have spiky yellow balls on top. What is it and how can I get rid of it? (Daniel,
Forrest City)
Your description sounds like yellow nutsedge (but take a sample by your
county office for confirmation.) Controlling nutsedge is very difficult.
Certainty (sulfosulfuron) provides suppression and is safe on all
warm-season grasses. SedgeHammer is less effective, but may be used on all
lawn grasses. Follow-up applications are needed.
Poison ivy is taking over the wooded part of my backyard. How can I get rid of
it safely? (Doug, Little Rock)
Three-ways (2,4-D plus dicamba plus MCPP), Roundup and triclopyr provide
fair to good control. Tank-mixing Roundup and triclopyr often improves
control. Repeat applications will be needed. Cutting stems at the base and
painting the cut ends with undiluted Roundup or triclopyr is another option.
