Wildlife - Dr. Becky McPeake

I've got a problem with some moles or gophers tunneling in my yard. What can I
do?
According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's Wildlife Code, it is
illegal to use toxins or poisons to kill any wildlife species excluding rats
and mice around the home. Poisons can harm or kill pets or other wildlife
which consume a poisoned mole or gopher. Besides being illegal, poisons,
toxins, and fumigants are also of limited effectiveness. The best solution
is to trap moles or gophers. It is important to identify which of these you
have because the trap designs are different. Gophers tend to leave
crescent-shaped (or kidney-shaped) mounds while moles leave volcano-shaped
mounds (if mounds are present at all). See
FSA9095 Controlling the Eastern Mole for details.
A skunk has sprayed my pet. How do I get rid of the odor?
There are several commercial products available to mask or remove skunk
odor, even a homemade solution. See
FSA9101 Dealing With Skunks and Odor Abatement for details about this as
well as ideas for trapping and relocating skunks.
We have found snakes inside our house. What should we do?
Non-venomous snakes can be removed by simply sweeping them in a trash can or
other container and releasing them outdoors. Snakes typically are seeking
prey such as insects or rodents, or a warm place to stay. Use pesticides to
remove insects from your home and remove rodents using snap traps. Clear
habitat for rodents and insects away from your home (such as brushpiles or
stacks of firewood) and seal up any small openings where a snake may gain
entry. See
FSA9102 Encountering Native Snakes in Arkansas for other ideas.
