Understanding Farm Labor Workshop

When: February 16, 2009

Where: U of A, Cooperative Extension Service, State Office

Registration Deadline: Monday, February 9, 2009

In an effort to assist growers with management and evaluation of their farm labor needs, the Arkansas Agriculture Department and the University of Arkansas, Cooperative Extension Service Division of Agriculture are partnering to offer a workshop on understanding farm labor.

The one-day workshop will feature presentations from an industry expert in farm labor contracting, Arkansas Agriculture Department, a couple of grower presentations, and a farm labor housing specialist.

If you are involved in production agriculture, labor issues are a primary concern for your operation. Regardless of your operation's size or enterprises grown, labor availability and quality are areas that require attention and management. This workshop will assist participants in identifying resources and understanding the multiple hurdles that must be addressed to satisfy farm's labor needs. Managing labor is important because costs associated with labor are typically one of the largest components of production costs and usually make-up more than half of the total production cost for specialty crop enterprises. This workshop is beneficial for all agricultural producers regardless of operation size or crop mix.

You do not have to be around produce farmers for very long before the conversation turns to farm workers.  Whether expanding production or converting from grain crops, sourcing and managing a growing pool of labor is a skill set you must have.  Our workshop will bring together labor consultants, local farmers, and other experts in the field to discuss the many aspects of hiring and housing local, foreign or guest workers.  A particular emphasis will be put on the H2A program. - Tim Ellison, Marketing Director - Arkansas State Plant Board, Arkansas Agriculture Department
