Marketing their crops and livestock has always been important to the profitability of Arkansas producers. It became more important with the passage of the 1996 Farm Bill. As American agriculture moves steadily to a market-oriented and global system, it is expected marketing will have a greater affect on farm-level profitability. Planting decisions will be based on expected market returns more so than in the past. Producers will experience greater exposure to price and yield risk. Thus, market information, records, and available marketing tools increase in their importance to successfully manage price risk.
