Hydrangea arborescens: Smooth HydrangeaThis small deciduous shrub is native to Eastern and Southeastern U.S.. You can see many fine examples of this plant if you ever drive the Blueridge Parkway. The plant is generally 4' tall by 5' wide with pure white flowers in May through early July. This plant must be situated in the shade in Arkansas and requires a moist soil rich in organic matter. It is rare to find the species in commercial trade. Two cultivars are common in the trade. 'Annabelle' and 'Grandiflora' were both selected for more showy flower-heads (inflorescence).
