Picture of group standing next to Southwest Research and Extension Center sign.You are invited to attend 2008 Horticulture Field Day at the University of Arkansas Southwest Research & Extension Center on June 5 2008, 3:30-8pm. After the field tour and dinner we will have a plant disease clinic. Bring your problem plants for diagnosis by Sherrie Smith.

Horticultural research at this experiment station began in 1928.  The current research program includes variety testing of peaches, blackberries, blueberries, and ornamental plants. Information gained from these trials is used to provide variety recommendations to farmers and home-owners. You will get first-hand information from the breeder and specialist.

Other major research programs at S.W.R.E.C. are in the areas of Beef , Forages, Forestry, and Plant Pathology.  The station is also home  of  the Nematode Diagnostic Clinic.

Registration is $8.

Field Tour

The following presentations will be given in the field: 

3:20 pm - ‘Blackberry and Peach Breeding Update’ - Dr. John R. Clark, Professor, Fruit Breeding

3:50 pm - ‘Fertilizer recommendation for Southern Orchard’ - Dr. Elena Garcia, Extension Fruit Specialist

4:20 pm - ‘How to pick up right plants for southern Arkansas  Yard’ - Dr. Jon Lindstrom, Professor,  Horticulture

4:50  pm– “Manage Tomato Nematode with Biofumigation Crops - Dr. Terry, Kirkpatrick,  Professor, Plant pathology

5:20 pm - ‘Lawn and turf Weed  management’ - Qingfang Chen, program associate

Return to the main building for the following:

5:50 pm - Vegetable garden disease management - Sherrie Smith, Director of Plant Disease Clinic, Lonoke

6:20 pm - Barbecue Dinner

After dinner, Sherrie Smith, Director of the Plant Disease Clinic in Lonoke, Arkansas and Ronnie Bateman, Director of the Arkansas Nematode Diagnostic Clinic at Hope will host a "walk-in" plant disease clinic.  Feel free to bring specimens from your home, garden, or lawn for diagnosis and suggestions for how to correct the problems."

Directions to the Station

From I-30 East (Little Rock):

Take Emmet exit 36. Go left at end of ramp. At Y junction go right onto Hwy 174 N. Follow road approx. 2 miles.  Station will be on your right.

From I-30 West (Texarkana)

Take Hope exit 31.  Go left at end of ramp. Take left at first light onto Bill Clinton Expressway (KFC is on corner).  Take second left onto Experiment Station Road.  At T junction go left onto Hwy 174 N.  Station will be immediately to your left.
