Plant Diseases
Fruit and Nut Diseases in Arkansas

The most common tree fruits grown in Arkansas include apples, peaches, nectarines and plums whereas grapes, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries constitute the majority of small fruits. Pecans are the primary nut crop grown in the state. The majority of the infectious diseases of fruits and nuts are caused by some type of a fungus. There are a few important diseases caused by bacteria and viruses. Many of these infectious or biotic diseases produce characteristic symptoms. Symptoms are the visible response to a particular disease agent. Common symptoms on fruit and nut crops include leaf spots, blights, cankers, and rots on various parts of the plant. In some instances, structures of the fungus or other agent may be apparent on the host plant. Symptoms and signs are useful in diagnosing many infectious diseases of fruits and nuts.
