Plant diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as fungi,
bacteria, viruses, and nematodes. Disease occurs when one or more of these
pathogens infects a susceptible variety under environmental conditions that are
favorable for disease development. Most wheat diseases can be controlled when
accurately identified. Some disease symptoms are characteristic and obvious.
Other diseases, however, may be difficult to diagnose without microscopic or
laboratory analysis. Because different diseases require different control
methods, accurate diagnosis of the problem is essential.
Experience with wheat may allow you to diagnose many common wheat diseases
without additional help. However, when in doubt, your local county agent
should be your first resource, both in obtaining an accurate diagnosis, and
in helping select the appropriate control methods. The county agent may
identify the problem in the field or in his office, or may submit a sample
to the plant disease specialist for further analysis.
