[Lanny Ashlock] I’m Lanny Ashlock at the University of Arkansas Division of
Agriculture and the Arkansas Soybean Pomotion Board and I’m with Hank Chaney the
Faulkner County Extension agent who’se been a driving force in looking at trying
to introduce edamame as a new crop in the Arkansas river Valley.

[Hank Chaney] This type of variety, it grows differently, its growth habits
are different as compared to conventional varieties. It likes to branch because
when this plant, when this particular variety was seeded, we were kind of
concerned about it filling in. but it’s done very nicely. It has that ability to
branch out we’re trying to fine-tune that just a little bit more.
[Lanny Ashlock] it’s pretty impressive to look at from my perspective.
[Hank Chaney] It’s very impressive. It’s loaded down quite nicely
good-looking soybeans, bunch of three-bean pods. It looks like your typical a
soybean plant you would grow normally Lanny.
[Lanny Ashlock] We have a field day planned here, September the nineteenth I
believe, Hank. As we look at this today, I think the beans will be just about
ready to harvest at that time and I hope the people can come out who have a real
interest in growing edamame in the River valley on September the nineteenth.
