Audio/Video Script:

[Title Slide – Arkansas Edamame - September 2011. Your Arkansas Soybean Podcast, University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Research and Extension U of A System, Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board Harvesting the Potential.]

[Dr. Lanny Ashlock, Soybean Promotion Board Coordinator and Assistant Vice-President – Special along with Hank Chaney – County Extension Agent – Faulkner County standing in an Edamame field]

[Lanny Ashlock] I’m Lanny Ashlock at the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture and the Arkansas Soybean Pomotion Board and I’m with Hank Chaney the Faulkner County Extension agent who’se been a driving force in looking at trying to introduce edamame as a new crop in the Arkansas river Valley.

[Video shows close-up of Edamame pods and plants]

[Hank Chaney] This type of variety, it grows differently, its growth habits are different as compared to conventional varieties. It likes to branch because when this plant, when this particular variety was seeded, we were kind of concerned about it filling in. but it’s done very nicely. It has that ability to branch out we’re trying to fine-tune that just a little bit more.

[Lanny Ashlock] it’s pretty impressive to look at from my perspective.

[Hank Chaney] It’s very impressive. It’s loaded down quite nicely good-looking soybeans, bunch of three-bean pods. It looks like your typical a soybean plant you would grow normally Lanny.

[Lanny Ashlock] We have a field day planned here, September the nineteenth I believe, Hank. As we look at this today, I think the beans will be just about ready to harvest at that time and I hope the people can come out who have a real interest in growing edamame in the River valley on September the nineteenth.

[Title slide – Edamame Field Day will take place on September 19, 2011 at the U A Vegetable Research Station at Kibler, AR. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. For more information contact your county Extension office or go to www.uaex.edu.

[Narrator] Your Arkansas Soybean Podcast is a production of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture and was funded in part by the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board.
