[Ken Smith standing in a soybean field] Hello I’m Ken Smith University of
Arkansas Division of Agriculture Weed Scientist, here today in Marianna,
Arkansas in a soybean research plot where we are looking at different
technologies for control of Paler Amaranth [picture of pigweed] or Pigweed in
soybean. [Ken Smith] I’m standing in the untreated check plot. As we can see,
[pictures of pigweed] no herbicide has been applied, many Pigweeds other weeds
or grasses, eucalyptus, etc. [Ken Smith] I’d like to walk through these with you
on this podcast and show you some of our more effective treatment and some
things that we can do to control Pigweed in soybeans in Arkansas.

present] In our first treatment plot here [Ken Smith] this is Authority first
followed by one application of Ignite. And as we can see this is a very clean
plot only a few grasses and a couple of nut sage plants that have escaped our
application of Ignite. We made one application of Ignite twenty-two days after
planting and a really clean plot, a nice plot here for residual herbicide.
Another of our pre-emerge herbicides, Prefix. Prefix is a combination of
Reflex plus Dual a nice plot for us, [Picture of soybean field looking at plants
and between rows, clean, no weeds present] one that had preformed very well for
us in Arkansas soybeans here. [Ken Smith] Prefix followed by one application of
Ignite, totally clean plot, very good application.
Our next plot is Authority first followed by Ignite. [Picture of soybean field
looking at plants and between rows, clean, no weeds present] Again, a very clean
plot with the exception of only one or two grass escapes. A very nice pre-emerge
with Authority first, Authority plus First Rate. [Ken Smith] Authority first
followed by Ignite, very nice plot.
And moving from our pre-emerge herbicides into a total post-program. Plant,
no pre-emerge, come back this has had one application of Ignite twenty-two days
after planting, a very common practice but not yet one that we will recommend
and not one that is going to be effective because of the Pigweed [Picture of
soybean field looking at plants and between rows, several weeds present] that
are going to survive. [Ken Smith] Again too much weed pressure for the level of
control that we’ve got. One application way too late.
