Developing a Biosecurity Plan for Your Farm
Action Plan for Farm Biosecurity if Suspected Biosecurity Risk for Animals is
Detected
1. Call local veterinarian for immediate diagnosis. Phone No. ( ) - .
2. Local veterinarian determines diagnosis 2A or 2B
A. Local veterinarian identifies symptom as a non-biosecurity risk.
(a) Take no further action, but monitor animals for symptoms
(b) Stop Action
B. Local veterinarian identifies symptom as possible biosecurity
risk.
3. Contact State Veterinarian at the Livestock and Poultry Commission
(see Appendix for Sample Emergency Contact List).
4. Block or lock all farm access gates to restrict movement on and off of
premises.
5. Notify all family members and employees of situation and restrict
movement on and off the premises without decontamination (see
Biosecurity:
Cleaning and Disinfecting).
6. Keep information on situation confidential until diagnosis confirmed.
7. Develop list of people and animals that entered and left the premises
during the last month (see Appendix for Sample Visitors' Log)
8. Assist State Veterinarian's staff and local veterinarian in collecting
needed samples for verification of suspected diagnosis.
9. Production records (vaccination records, cow production records,
livestock sale records, etc.) may be very important. These records should be
organized and available for review. Other records such as financial records
and registration papers should also be available. These records may become
important to determine value of animals.
10. Have an aerial map of farm(s) and pastures.
11. Maintain a list (names, addresses and phone numbers) of all livestock
owners that have livestock on your property in your control.
12. An emergency animal disposal plan should be completed. This plan
should determine the area(s) on the farm for which animal burial is
approved, transportation route on and off the farm to transport dead animals
(rendering service), and/or composting or incineration facilities and plans.
13. Plans should be secured so that non-susceptible and non-affected
species can be moved or managed without possible exposure. This would
include transportation routes (on the farm) for feed delivery, litter or
manure handling, etc.
14. Notify adjacent property owners to monitor or restrict movement from
premises (see Appendix for Sample Adjacent Property Owners List).
15. Maintain security until results are returned from State
Veterinarian's office. Have veterinarian contact the County Sheriff to
notify service personnel of restricted entry (see
Appendix for Sample
Service Personnel List).
16. When results from the State Livestock and Poultry Commission are
returned
A. If the results are negative for biosecurity risk
1. Contact everyone previously to inform them of results
2. Unlock gates and return to normal security measures
3. Take no further action, but monitor animals for symptoms
B. If the results are positive, follow actions required by the
Authorities In Charge.
