Arkansas Chick Placements Up 3 Percent from Last Year
NASS indicates that Arkansas broiler-type chicks placed for meat production
in Arkansas were 24.1 million during the week ending January 26, 2008. Arkansas
with 13.5% of U.S. broiler-type chicks placed was second in chick placements
following Georgia with 30.1 million.
Foodsize Catfish Inventory Down 13 Percent
The National Agricultural Statistical Service indicates Arkansas catfish producers had 46.4 million foodsize fish on
January 1, 2008. Arkansas foodsize catfish was down 13 percent from a year ago.
The number of large, medium, and small foodzize catifish on hand are as follows:
- Large foodsize fish on hand totaled 2 million, up 25 percent from January 1,
2007.
- Medium foodsize inventory on hand totaled 13.5 million and was down 6
percent from 2007.
- Small foodsize catfish, at 30.9 million, was down 17 percent from January 1,
2007.
Arkansas 2007 catfish grower sales were down 10 percent from 2006 at $71.5
million. As of January 1, 2008, the water surface acres being used for catfish
production totaled 29,900 acres. Catfish surface acre production is down 2
percent from a year earlier. Finally, the number of catfish operations decreased
from 137 on January 1, 2007 to 128 on January 1, 2008.
