Arkansas’ Rice Situation and Outlook, Presented 2007 USA National Rice Outlook Conference, Orlando Florida – December 2-4, 2007 by Bobby Coats – Professor & Extension Economist, University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture (4:48 minutes)

Audio/Video Script:

Dr. Bobby Coats
Extension Economist
University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture

This is Part 1 of Arkansas’ 2008 Rice Situation and Outlook. I’m Bobby Coats Extension Economist University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.

Slide 1[Arkansas Map] - I do appreciate the opportunity to be with you today and discuss Arkansas’ Rice Situation and Outlook.

In the 2007 Arkansas rice production season market price uncertainty and high input costs caused Arkansas rice producers to reduced their rice acreage and intensify their focus on productivity and make necessary adjustments to manage their per unit costs.

Slide 2 [Line Graph] - Thus, the 2007 AR rice production season was a challenging production season due to market price uncertainty, continued high production costs and periods of excessive drought and heat.

In 2007 Arkansas all rice producers harvested 1,325,000 acres of rice. That was 5.3-percent less than 2006’s 1,400,000 acres. 2007’s 1,325,000 acres is more of a normal level of sustainable total rice production for Arkansas.

Slide 3 [Line Graph] - In 2007 Arkansas all rice producers had an estimated record yield of 7200-pounds per acre or 160 bushels per acre, which was above 2006’s 6980 pounds or 155 bushels per acre.

Slide 4 [Line Graph] - In 2007 Arkansas all rice producers had an estimated production of 95.4-million cwt, slightly below last years 2006 95.9 million cwt and the 7th largest on record. In 2007 Arkansas all rice producers produced an estimated 48-percent of total rice produced in the U.S.

Slide 5 [Bar Graph] - In 2007 Arkansas rice producers planted 35.5-percent of their rice to Wells, 11% to Francis, 10.2% to CL 161, 8.5% to Rice Tec XP 723, 7.5% to medium grain Bengal, 6.5% to Cocodrie, 5.2% to Rice Tec XL 729, 4.1% to Rice Tec CL XL 730

Slide 6 [Arkansas Map] - The top five 2007 Arkansas rice counties by acreage were Poinsett county with an estimate 117,414 acres harvested, Arkansas county with 105,961 acres , Lawrence county with 98,390 acres, Jackson county with 91,860 acres, and Cross county with 85,053 acres.

Slide 7 [Map of Craighead County] – Turning now to Arkansas long grain rice.

Slide 8 [Bar Graph] – In 2007 Arkansas long grain rice producers harvested an estimated 1,180,000 acres. This is the lowest long grain rice harvested acreage since 2000, but a more sustainable level of acreage given the lack of progress in the global trade agreement.

Slide 9 [Bar Graph] - In 2007 Arkansas long grain rice farmers produced an estimated 85 million cwt of long grain rice, which if achieved will be the 7th largest on record and represents an estimated 60-percent of the 2007 long grain rice produced in the United States.

Slide 10 [Arkansas Map] – Turning now to Arkansas medium grain rice.

Slide 11[Bar Graph] - In 2007 Arkansas medium grain rice producers increased their harvested acres by 39% to 144,000 acres, due to medium grain price strength and the new medium grain rice variety Jupiter.

Slide 12 [Bar Graph] - In 2007 Arkansas medium grain rice farmers produced an estimated 10.4 million cwt of rice. Arkansas medium grain rice producers produced an estimated 21-perent of the medium grain rice produced in the U.S. in 2007.
